Preparing for War

The permanent exhibition “Preparing for War” focuses on the history of Fort Ingall as both an archaeological and historical site.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited to trace the fort’s history and understand the geopolitical context that led to its construction. The exhibition also features numerous artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations carried out on the site.

The content presents a human perspective on the border tensions of the time, highlighting 2 key historical figures: Dr. Jean-Étienne Landry, the garrison physician, and Lieutenant Frederick Lenox Ingall, the military engineer who oversaw the construction of the fort.

Through artifacts and historical writings, visitors gain a deeper understanding of military life and the daily experiences of those who lived at Fort Ingall during the Aroostook War (1838–1842).
